Don't Mess With Texas but Think of Its Infrastructure

As more information about Texas' fatal and disastrous week with its energy system, the evidence points more and more towards the importance of infrastructure when it comes to thinking about energy distribution.

Texas is the #1 producer of wind energy in the United States and alone is #5 in the world (for reference, California generates less energy than states like Iowa and Oaklahoma).

As the news stories came out, some pundits pointed to this large wind energy generation as the reason for the entire grid's failures. However, a closer look at Texas' infrastructure may tell a different story. Texas is mostly energy independent from the rest of North America meaning that it cannot easily draw energy generated in surrounding states.

Louisiana borders Texas and faced similar extreme weather conditions but did not face the same extreme energy shortages.

Similarly, for committee, it is important for delegates to consider the larger infrastructural impacts of your proposed solutions. Yes, wind energy and nuclear energy could spell a carbon-neutral energy future but what good is that if the system cannot meet real energy demands?

We encourage delegates to propose solutions focused less on the deployment of specific types of technologies but rather think about the infrastructure and institutions that would support a resilient and green future.

Right now, many people in Texas are still facing shortages and many families have lost loved ones during this time. If you have the extra capital, please consider donating to mutual aid efforts.

How do you finance international environmental agreements?

When drafting international environmental agreements, nation states must be aware of how these solutions will be funded. The UN has various institutions in place that deal with funding. Background World Bank/IMF World Bank - The World Bank is an international organization founded by the United Nations (UN) with the purpose of financing projects that promote the economic development of its member states (Britannica).  The International Monetary Fund was created by the UN to stabilize international economic cooperation and balance currency exchange rates (Britannica). Both institutions support the “structure of the world's economic and financial order” and “concentrate their efforts on broadening and strengthening the economies of their member nations” (IMF). However, there is a main distinction between the two. While the Bank is a development institution that aims to end extreme poverty in UN’s client countries, the IMF is a cooperative institution that attempts to strengthen the cu...

Don't Waste Time

The Model United Nations format is super restrictive. With all things considered we have less than 9 hours total to debate these topics, find a good resolution that is both reasonable and attainable, and pass them! This year, we have added layers of difficulty with possible tech issues and clunkier unmoderated caucuses. Some advice for getting your points across and being efficient overall: Be prepared! Come prepared with some short blurbs or speeches to give during moderated caucuses! Often times you can predict what other countries will be bringing as their concerns or ideas. How would your country respond?  Practice Practice Practice! Get comfortable speaking about the topics and the main points your delegation is bringing! Mention countries you are working with! As committee progresses, the easiest way to keep the rest of committee updated is to be clear on which resolutions you are working on by consistently naming other countries that are in the same bloc! This can als...
