Intellectual Property & The World Trade Organization

For Topic B in this committee, a problem touched upon is the complex world of intellectual property and the World Trade Organization (WTO). A lot of delegates have proposed interesting solutions in their position papers on this. There are definitely a lot of barriers to making the proposals a reality.

Remember, you should be thinking about the feasibility and scope of the UNFCCC's powers!

When drafting international environmental agreements, nation states must be aware of how these solutions will be funded. The UN has various institutions in place that deal with funding. Background World Bank/IMF World Bank - The World Bank is an international organization founded by the United Nations (UN) with the purpose of financing projects that promote the economic development of its member states (Britannica). The International Monetary Fund was created by the UN to stabilize international economic cooperation and balance currency exchange rates (Britannica). Both institutions support the “structure of the world's economic and financial order” and “concentrate their efforts on broadening and strengthening the economies of their member nations” (IMF). Things to Consider: Forming Blocs in Committee

Forming blocs in committee is often a tough and chaotic process! In a BMUN committee of our size, we expect approximately 3-4 blocs will write resolutions. Here are some guiding questions we hope delegates are considering when forming blocs. Is the topic a more regional or institutional question? If it is regionally based, find countries that are of the same region as you! If the topic focuses more on institutional systems, it is important to know what other countries have similar institutions! For example, Topic A is more regionally based while Topic B's focus on institutions is much clearer. Think about how your countries institutions might impact its opinions on the topic (ie. public universities, governmental research bodies, and intellectual property systems) What resolutions are compatible with your proposed solution?
